If there was a switch on the outside of the AP that said "Share Safely" I believe most people would flip it on. It's the safely and securely that is at issue. I am definitely interest in experiences using the guest feature on the extreme.

Still free and open 24/7 - drive on by or sit in the park next to my house, though it will require you are in PDX not NYC. Perhaps it is more of a NYC thing. I still seem to find WiFi in almost all neighborhoods. One difference is new people (came on in the last 2 years) are secured systems, while old timers (say like me going back to the 90's) still seem to want to share. Full disclosure - I've used Apple airports since they came out.
